چکیده

Abstract Despite the potential benefits gained from behavioural lateralisation, defined as asymmetrical expression of cognitive functioning, this trait demonstrates widespread variation within and between populations. Numerous methodologies have been applied to investigate although whether different give consistent results has relatively understudied. In study, we assess (1) repeatability individual Poecilia reticulata ’s lateralisation indexes a classic detour assay (I-maze), quasi-circular mirror maze novel (a radially symmetric Y-maze); (2) methodological standard analysing only first ten turns in accurately quantifies lateralisation; (3) produced can be adequately explained by random chance comparing observed data unbiased ‘coin-toss’ randomisation model. We found two assays produce generally terms relative (directionality) but differed absolute laterality (intensity). The assay, however, demonstrated no similarity either assay. were reflective all undertaken during 15-min trial reducing number did exaggerate indexes. similar corresponding datasets model, with significant deviations likely individuals’ propensity perform consecutive same direction. These demonstrate need increase turning choices reduce likelihood producing spurious or exaggerated external influences. Significance statement Published studies investigating ‘handedness’, fish species used diverse array methodologies. Given variability being employed extent are lateralised which direction (left right), it is important methods From assessing three assays, was correlate measuring turn choice, strength not consistent. There correlations these an individual’s eye-use when viewing their reflection However, further investigation using model simulate replica for each brings into question patterns population differ significantly chance.

Experience-Dependent Color Constancy in Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

We investigated the ability to recognize the color of surfaces in fish (Poecilia reticulata), bred from birth in conditions of artificial light with constant spectral content. The capacity for color constancy significantly deteriorated when compared that to the control group. Further alteration of lighting conditions and transfer into natural daylight conditions restored the suppressed function...

Social networks in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Social network theory is used to elicit details of the social structure of a population of free-ranging guppies, Poecilia reticulata. They were found to have a complex and highly structured social network, which exhibited characteristics consistent with the 'small world' phenomenon. Stable partner associations between individuals were observed, a finding that fulfils the basic prerequisite for ...

Brain size affects the behavioural response to predators in female guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

Large brains are thought to result from selection for cognitive benefits, but how enhanced cognition leads to increased fitness remains poorly understood. One explanation is that increased cognitive ability results in improved monitoring and assessment of predator threats. Here, we use male and female guppies (Poecilia reticulata), artificially selected for large and small brain size, to provid...

Systemic Granulomatosis in Guppies Poecilia reticulata

In many guppy Poecilia reticulata farms in the vicinity of Bangkok, diseases have caused longlasting fish death and consequently large cumulative mortality. Diseased guppies were collected and subjected to histopathological analysis. The analysis revealed systemic granulomatosis as a remarkable histological sign. Rod-shaped bacterial cells with strong acid-fastness were found in the granulomas....
